Mobile Phone Forensics: Sudden Death Syndrome

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever had a Galaxy S III (GT-i9300) submitted which appears to be 'dead'; due to what they believe to be a case of the Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS)? I know there have been new firmware releases since this first became an issue which sorted this, but was curious what avenues have been taken to process the device and attempt to obtain data by others (if you have had this situation). I have been approached on a couple of occasions privately, however not for an LE job. - The device would not be seen by any forensic/non-forensic software. - S-Boot Repair Clip method does not work. - Cannot Flash, as obviously you would lose data. - Chip-Off read successful, however data appears corrupt. - Samsung will just replace the chip (if under warranty), but means no data. For those who are not aware - There was a bug in the phone's firmware a while back, which would kill the actual eMMC chip on the device's PCB. This was common on versions 4.0.4 & 4.1.1. Samsung released an update to firmware version 4.1.2 Jelly Bean which would prevent this issue from occurring.
