Hi 4Rensics,
The chipset you mentioned (MT6252) is pretty common for Chinese phones. The manufacturers in China who make these Mediatek, Spreadtrum and Infineon phones are called IDHs (Independent Design Houses), and it's up to them how to design the device around the Mediatek SoC hardware. There are almost a thousand IDHs, some of which are coming out with 2-3 phones per week. So you can imagine the variations found among them. Even within the "keyfob phone" category finding a validation phone can be difficult or impossible, there's a lot of them out there (I've seen hundreds of types of key fob phones in Chinese markets). So it's always a tossup whether or not you've got a test phone that actually matches your device.
The products on the market that support physical analysis of Chinese devices are Chinex and Tarantula. Our company, EDEC, produces Tarantula, and we focus exclusively on Chinese chipsets. If you are interested in seeing other common Chinese chip types, click here to go to the Tarantula page, then click documents and download our user manual. Page 5 has a list of what's out there.
Anyway, if you haven't had success on the decoding side I'm willing to try our Tarantula decoding and return a report. If the device contains data there's a good chance we can recover IMEIs, pin codes, file system, etc. If you can't release the binary file, you're welcome to try our 30 day free Loaner Program. I'm hoping we can help you here.
Cheers,
Ryan Judy
